Why Is My Overhead Device Missing Shots?

Why Is My Overhead Device Missing Shots?

If your Foresight Sports device appears to “miss shots,” this is often caused by hitting mat setup or usage, rather than a device fault. Below are steps to identify and correct the issue.

Step 1: Check Mat Placement

  • Ensure the hitting mat is firmly adhered to the floor and does not shift during use.
  • Avoid lightweight mats that ripple or move on impact — this can cause the ball to roll out of the capture zone before the club makes contact.

Step 2: Confirm Ball Position

  • Place the ball correctly within the designated hitting area/ball lock zone.
  • If the club contacts the mat before the ball, the ball may be nudged forward out of position, resulting in a missed read.

Step 2.5: Verify Hitting Mode (Left- or Right-Handed)

  • GC3 / Launch Pro / GCQuad / QuadMAX:
Switch hand preference directly on the device using the touchscreen, and/or L/R Buttons.
When the wrong mode is selected (for example, a left-handed player hitting in right-handed mode), shots may not register because the ball is outside the active capture area.
  • Falcon / GCHawk:
These overhead-mounted systems automatically switch sides based on the ball position in the left or right hitting zone. If you’ve moved hitting mats or changed layouts, recalibration may be required.

Step 3: Inspect Lighting and Environment

  • Make sure the hitting area is free of glare, or reflective surfaces.
  • For overhead-mounted devices (Falcon, GCHawk), ensure the area is evenly lit and free from hanging objects.
  • Any modification to the calibrated hitting or launch area requires recalibration (IE... New Hitting Mat, Branding, Tables, Desks, Etc...).
  • If the device is removed from its mounting for cleaning, recalibration is required once remounted.

Step 4: Update Firmware

  • Confirm your device is on the latest firmware version.
  • Updates often include improvements to shot detection and error handling.

Step 5: Provide Saved Shots

  • If missed shots continue after these checks, save and send a set of captured shots (including misses) to our Support Team.
  • This data is essential for diagnosing whether the issue is environment, usage, or hardware-related.

Our Support Limitations

  • Foresight Sports cannot diagnose missed shots without saved shot data from the customer.
  • If saved shots show the device is functioning within specification, the issue is considered setup-related rather than a hardware failure.

When to Contact Support

If you have confirmed proper mat setup and ball placement, updated firmware, and are still experiencing frequent missed shots:

  • Contact our Support Team.
  • Include your device’s serial number and a set of saved shots that show the issue.

FAQ

Why does the mat matter so much?
If the club strikes the mat before the ball, the ripple effect can push the ball out of position before it’s captured by the device.

Can firmware updates fix missed shots?
In some cases, yes. Updates often improve shot capture logic and consistency.

What if my device passes testing but still misses shots at home?
In this case, the issue is environmental (mat, lighting, or setup) and not a hardware defect.
